The California Merge.
TW introduced me to the California Merge when I first started letting her drive my car in New York. When merging onto major roadways, she would come off of the on-ramp at full speed, expecting any car in the highway's right lane to yield to her. "That's the way we do it in California," she'd say as I'd sprout a new white hair. Cars would brake. Cars would honk. TW and I would get into debates over the intended audience of the yield sign. I would deliver clever monologues about how the merge sign held clues as to the order of things like some transportation sector da vinci code. Still, she wouldn't budge. "You east coast people drive weird."
Now that I've done more extended driving through Southern California, I can finally say that I've experienced the California Merge. I get the California Merge.
And I still think it's completely fucked up.

Comments
Agreed. People make racist comments about driving all the time, but I maintain that it's regional. It is possible, for instance, that the best drivers in the world all come from the DC area, since we have to learn how to navigate the beltway. It's also possible that certain dense cities lend themselves to a learned set of driving skills considered "bad."
The "california merge" makes me angry.
