formatting web pages and video download links for the psp web browser.

For months I had trouble encoding MP4 video for direct download to PSPs with the 2.0 firmware. Any binary I created in ffmpegX would would render in the PSP web browser as a text file. At first I was convinced that I was missing something -- there was either some happy javascript or some special header I was missing that only worked for sony connect (even the psp-formatted 29hdnetwork folks had issues -- and still do, on occasion.) Eventually I transcoded a video with PSPWare and it worked without issue. Granted, I don't have the bitrate nor the frame size I want, but it's a start. Now I just have to compare the files, figure out what I did wrong and write it all down.

One thing I'm realizing is that the world's gonna have to wait until Sony's 3.0 firmware for widespread "direct download" adoption. Any download process that includes the instructions...

4) To "Select a location to save to": For an AVC file named MAQXXXXX choose /MP_ROOT/101ANV01 and press X. For all other AVC MP4 files named M4VXXXXX, choose /MP_ROOT/101MNV01 and press X.

...is doomed to geekdom. This kind of thing has no place in a device for civilians. There's also the additional problem of bandwidth vs. battery vs. time as it can take a good 2-4 minutes to download a 2-4 minute video on the PSP. Hopefully Flash Lite or a QuickTime plugin is also on its way. Until then, we're stuck with caching files through 3rd-party desktop middlemen.

I also realize that web page navigation on a PSP is pretty lousy with but a four-way pad and an analog stick that mouses from link to link. A few months ago, Andrew started playing with formatting RocketBoom for PSPs and mobile phones. Although the 3gp phone downloads are still going strong, the PSP downloads are gone. I've been playing around with different page layouts for a 480x270 screen. Maybe we should make a PSP-friendly website an assignment for this semester's Portable Video class.

Cheese,

I use PSPVideo 9 to do my video conversions to PSP. There's a truckload of various settings to mess around with, but (to my knowledge) to 480x272 setting besides doing a custom one.

Mpegable x4 live may be an option to. I use that for the formatting to my Motorola.

Holla,
Jeff
