The Playground Is Open: raw notes from Drazen Pantic's "Crisis of Trust in the Media Landscape"

Got there about 30 minutes late so if you end up watching the stream, my notes start just after the Daily Show clip.

Videoblogging is coming/already here.

Ignore the structuralist argument and it's just posting video to a blog. From there, realize that video is extremely important to people. People want to see rich media/visuals. There's a synergy between blogs, video, and the net -- especially when coupled with efficient distribution.

A brief timeline of videoblogging.

Mentioned Jay, Peter Van Dijck, videoblogging group. Jay Dedman and Ryanne Hodson = Jason Kottke & Meg Hourihan? ;) Blogging provides a merchanism for building reputation, constructing metadata.

vloggercon started with no set resources or money. Started by Jay and Kenyatta (** not true - actually Jay and Peter, then Jay, Ryanne, Steve Garfield. After that, the next level of support includes Shawn Van Every, Jeffrey Galusha, Dan Melinger, Andrew Michael Baron, Chris Weagel, Jakob Lodwick, Eli Chapman, Eric Botticelli, Mica Salin. But whatever, right?**) Lots of interest from mainstream media, corporate folks. They sense money. Most videobloggers started without knowing how to edit. With each post they gain a greater editing vocabulary, larger audience. Dylan Verdi. The importance isn't her age but that she gets the milleu. Showed her first video. Showed Ryanne's DoE vs. Buster vs. Videobloggers clip (** That is such a strong piece. Must blog about it.**) It shows how videoblogging can be more compelling, more persuasive than a text blog.

Linux Virgin

Example merges all these forms -- videoblogs, bottom up "viral" spread, open source, and pr0n. :) Shows a clip from this week's episode. Ridiculously funny.

The resurgence of the music video.

No more space for music videos on teevee. MTV, VH1 all about reality shows, so indie acts post their own music videos online.

The Scene.

Compelling, reasonably well scripted narrative that takes place on a Windows desktop. (** Killer title sequence helps, too. **)

Trust and sincerity.

Mainstream media has lost the public's trust. (** There are over 100 million nightly viewers that compel me to disagree.**) Why don't we trust the journalists anymore? Bigger question may be: what happens in an absence of credibility? Where will the public search it out? Right now, it seems to be in blogs we trust.

That's why videoblogs can be soooo important right now. Ultimately video is more sincere than anything else. We don't know where it's all gonna go but we can see the potential. The forms of personal expression (** through video**) we see now will be mimicked by mainstream media. (** I have no problem with this. The form has never been the issue. The problem is that no matter how hard mainstream journalism tries, we can still see their soul. Carry a clean conscience and all will be forgiven. **) We look at that special little sumpthin sumpthin that projects like Linux Virgin, The Scene, and Dylan's videoblog have, and we recognize in it a sincerity that mass media is incapable of reproducing. Doesn't mean they're not gonna try.

Exploding Rice.

Eric Rice, that is. It's happened at least twice in the past couple of weeks and it's been wonderful.

First read yesterday's Exploding Manifesto.

"Audioblogs, Podcasts, Videoblogs, and Blogs are the same conceptual thing. It's not about the technology, it's about the voice and the fact that we, the everyday people, are making media."

Then earlier: The concept of making media as a basic life skill.

There is a notion that audio and video are difficult media to create, more so than writing. This could directly relate to the fact that we live in a print-oriented world. Letters. Alphabets. It's easy to write a letter. That's what is taught in schools. The creation of media that affects the other senses, sound and vision is not as strongly encouraged.

The question: What if making video (moving pictures) was as natural a process as writing?

Sprinkled in there are a bunch of posts from Northern Voice. All worth a gander.

Watch Gabe T's Blackaphobia! piece tonight on VH-1.

Super Producer Gabe, also known for his subway train parties put together a segment for a special on VH-1 tonight called Blackaphobia! Once again, as a media producer without a properly sanctioned media consuming tool, I'll be catching this one on the torrent.

Blackaphobia!
African Americans still seem to be the scariest minority and we need to know why:
# Why do some people get nervous when there's more than one black person around?
# Do cornrows make anybody look more intimidating?

OTHER AIRDATES: THURS 2.24 1PM, FRIDAY 2.25 12AM, SUN 2.27 1:30AM

Step away from the CSS Mr. Cheese....

I decided to have a little fun with the css for kenyattacheese.net.

And I'm still working on it.

Also added chatango at the suggestion of mr. chapman... but I can't remember why. i know there was a good idea in there somewhere.

Anyway, yes, it's a interface design nightmare, but I like it that way (for now.)

colbertkilledapanda.com

I can't believe someone registered the domain (yes I can). Anyway, I just caught the Daily Show segment on Gannon/Guckert and the crackuposphere. Chuckled so hard I think I did a little tinkle.

This is why I wish I had cable teevee. Well, that and the NBA Playoffs.

rocketboom on yatta on rocketboom.

Forgot to mention that the Rocketboom crew stopped by to interview me the other day. Go count the number of times I say "um" and multiply that by 20 and you'll get an idea of what the unedited interview was like. I promise that I'll be so much more coherent once I get over the Costa Rican jet lag.

Jeff Chang book release tonight.

Tricia sent me info on Jeff Chang's book release event at tonight for his book on the Hip-Hop generation, Can't Stop Won't Stop. It's a good panel of good folks including Jin (you know, the 106th & Park Destroyer.)

Unfortunately, I'll be busy at the Urban Gaming Forum @ Eyebeam tonight but it should be a good event if you can make it.

Oh yeah, the Eyebeam event should be good, too. :)

Just learned that Rocketboom is heading for the vlogging panel at SXSW this year. Kudos.

By the way, check out today's post on the Christo/Home Depot collaboration. There's some nice time remapping in there.

backlinkage....

Check out Chelsea Peretti's guest blogged posts over at modernpooch last week. While Harner is always lol rofl j/k j/k haha funny, Peretti's posts were vomit-on-the-floor funny. I mean it. Seriously. I'm treading in a pool of my own vomit at this very moment.

Cally did a photoblog tour of her time spent on subway platforms. (Cally: flickr and tag your shizit!) Here's my favorite:

Speaking of flickr, I found that the slideshows of user tagged images from Christo's The Gates at Central Park were much more enjoyable than any of the "pro" images in the papers yesterday.

And Ryan reminds me that I have yet to receive that copy of Uzumaki I bought on eBay before I left.

Someone's not getting a "EXCELLENT SELLER! A++++++ WOULD DO BZNESS WITH AGAIN!" from me this week.

The RSS feed will be quiet for a while....

Oh wait -- it's already quiet. Well, now that the updated PowerBook is out, I'll finally have a replacement for the stolen 'Book. I flirted with the idea of dual booting a Thinkpad T42 and then I had to spend a week in XP Pro so that idea got shot to hell.

This means that I'll start posting regularly again, but not until I get back from Costa Rica for my work staff retreat (yes, it's a nonprofit. no, you don't understand what I had to go through in a previous life to get here.)

The rest of the unmediated crew will be holding down reblogging duties. See everyone else in a bit.

smoke

hey, go check out cally's post on the callyblog.

"She smoked like a real smoker, with pleasure, releasing silvery streams from her nostrils. This would have turned my stomach if my parents had done it, but from her this gesture was the picture of sophistication. We must have been talking, but I can’t recall any topics. I do remember being scornful of my family, possibly calling my brother and sister losers, hoping this was how one established coolness with an older girl."

Good stuff.
