free culture:phase 2.

So I was down in d.c. for this free culture phase 2 conference put together by Colin Mutchler, Malkia Lydia, and American University. (Check Peter Levine's summary.) The idea was to assemble a braintrust of folks working on the tools, policy and processes that are helping to build an open, more participatory culture.

So I went down there and found a lot of people doing some good stuff.

Like Downhill Battle who wants to turn broadcasting into a meritocracy. And GNN who's been doing a hell of a lot more besides that fantastic Eminem video. And Third World Majority who's affecting social justice through media. CivicSpace will be a great platform for organizing movements, which Music For America already proves. And Aspiration is going to make everything easier for NGOs.

CC is pimping open licensing (j/k) while Consumers Union, Public Knowledge, and the ACM keep the policy makers in check. Prometheus Radio Project raises even more consciousness than they do barns and CD Baby is keeping a good thing going.

Scribe Video Center is fighting the good fight in Philly while FreeCulture is looking to move their fight offline and off campus to other communities. Pop + Politics and OneWorld is keeping folks informed. Indyvoter is about to drop a new website on us and prepare us for the next round. And UAEM and Martha's Table continue to do some of the best work out there.

And David is just the world's biggest badass.

Oh yeah, I made a new keynote slide that explains what I see as the four layers that need to be considered when programming a free culture and the "openness" that cooresponds to each one (mad props to alex galloway for inspiration.) I think I repeated myself about four or five times, but just in case, here it is again:

four layers of free culture and bean and cheese burritos

It sort of makes sense, right?

Anyways, methinks something's gonna come of this conference and whatever it is will be fantastic.
