For Apple repairs in NYC, go to Tekserve
Wow. I just heard two different horror stories about getting your Powerbook or iBook repaired in New York City. And not to name names, but both stories involved some random Mac Store on Prince Street. The service was lousy, the lines were long, and the prices were exorbitant.
I've said it to people time and time again in everything but my blog so here it goes: If you have to get your *Mac or *Book fixed in New York, in or out of warranty, go to Tekserve.
May I never hear a bad Apple service story again.

My wife and I visited Tekserve on 23rd St. to retain the assistance of a gentleman who could burn an iphoto slide show onto a DVD. We spent approximately 2hours waiting for the disc, but a faulty burner requires us to return the next morning to pick up the DVD.
While we pass the time in Tekserve, my wife and I note that for our three day tradeshow at the Piers, it would be more aesthetically pleasing, mobile (we can take it home every evening), and logistically easier to rent a Powerbook G4 than to purchase a TV and DVD player from an electronics retailer.
The next morning we return to Tekserve and the disc, burnt in duplicate, is ready for us. While the disc is being tested, my wife and I proceed to rent an Apple Powerbook G4 with a 17” screen. Both of us individually ask the salesperson if the computer is equipped with everything the invoice states. He answers with “yes”. All we care about is our ability to play the DVD in a continuous loop during our tradeshow.
The charge for a week rental is $400, and the deposit for the machine is $3600.
Four days later we arrive at the store to return the rental (without the original receipt since we came straight from the tradeshow). Check-in is taking so long that I approach three gentlemen to inquire and am told that there is 512MB of RAM missing from the hard drive and that they are going to deduct this from our deposit. Furthermore, the copy of the invoice they retrieve is showing a rental charge for a two week period for $700. (I have both the old and the new copies of the invoice.)
Neither my wife nor I own an Apple computer and neither of us is savvy enough to remove anything from any of Apple’s computers.
If you choose to use Tekserve to repair or replace any parts in your computer, or if you choose to rent from them, be certain you can trust that they will fairly and ethically handle your account.
Only time stands in the way of the truth.

I'm sorry your experience sucked. In my eight years of working with thousands of computer repairs in NYC, I've never had a single problem with Tekserve which is more than I can say for other repair shops in the area, PC or Mac.
By the way - you *rented* a laptop?
