my post of old names that i google every now and then hoping to catch up with them some day.
okay, i may not google all of these folks. but i'd sure like to meet them again some day. the other day i received an email from someone i hadn't spoken to in years. she had contacted me to say thank you for a book i lent her a long time ago. that made my day. it also got me thinking about other people i'd like to catch up with some time in life. so i decided to compile a list of folks on the off chance that they (like several people i know, uh, including myself) will google themselves every now and then. so if you happen to be on this list and you remember someone named kenyatta cheese, drop me a line.

Buying Your Own FireWire Hard Drive
I actually received a couple of emails in the past month asking me where the old firewire drive articles were. the ironic thing is that they're on a hard drive with a bad firewire bridge.
in the meantime, check out this article on firewire hard drives i wrote for mnn a while ago. the short answer is: go and buy a lacie d2.

The FireWire ports have failed on my Mac.
Okay, this post isn't really the statement of a problem i'm having right now. It's moreso a catch to assist folks looking for help on their failed FireWire ports.
Basically, the short form answer is to read this excellent white paper on firewire port failures by WiebeTech. while firewire port failure is usually a very complex issue, the usual culprit isn't power but a failure of the lines that supply data to/from the host (anyone who's had the blue light on a lacie d2 drive come to life without mounting on the desktop knows exactly what i mean.)
If neat forensic photos are more of what you're in to, check out this medicalmac post on Dead FireWire (gosh I love their graphics!) That is all. Hope it helps.
