del.icio.us social bookmarking.

the brilliant app with the clever domain name. you keep your bookmarks online through a simple link on your bookmark bar. the advantage of keeping your bookmarks online is that you have access to your bookmarks where ever you are. the brilliance comes in rather slyly after you post - you go to the front page and your link along with the number of other people who've also bookmarked the same thing. ha. love it.

samsung's 25fps streaming video phone

sprintpcsinfo has posted some general specs on samsung's next interesting cameraphone - the a700. this one is truly special b/c it's a videophone. it records 25fps or streams 15fps with support for 3gpp, 3gpp2, and the h.263 codecs.

i'm expecting a streaming video phone to eventually do for community television what cell phones in general did for community radio - they allowed these stations to compete with the big bois by enabling them to deliver live reports from the field at a much cheaper cost. even if public access doesn't picks up on this, i'm sure cnn will. either way, i think i found my next camcorder. damn. just when i was about to switch away from sprint, too!

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!

monday night i was watching coverage of the iowa caucus on c-span when i saw howard dean get up on stage. i thought that i had seen enough so when i turned away, i missed the howard dean as the hulk impression. fortunately, kind souls andrea and jonah proceeded to fill me in on mr angry's spectacle that i now have some context for forwarding this ditty: the howard dean goes nuts remix.

updated: here are a couple more links: version 2, version 3 - both fun but not as clever.

yatta's list of cafes with free wifi access in new york city

okay. this will be an always changing post. every couple of weeks, cally calls me up from the street, asking me to give her the name and location of a cafe with free internet access that's close to her. like i'm supposed to know all of this off of the top of my head.

but i try to accommodate her anyway. whenever i do a google search for free wifi hotspots in new york, i usually get a list of useless access points only acceessibl from the street. either that or a list of every verizon and starbucks/t-mobile location in manhattan. the nycwireless/nodedb list is extensive but a little too overwhelming (geeky data-centric) for most folks i send that way. rarely do i get a simple list of (open) APs in places that are actually usable for any reasonable amount of time (accessible from some place other than a sidewalk.)

so to better facilitate cally and anyone else searching for free wifi hotspots in nyc here is my list of cafe's i've confirmed have free wireless internet access in new york, along with any other possibly useful information i can find. i'm going to link this entry from the front page so that people like cally and i can refer to it before leaving the house. (or rather, i can refer to it when cally calls me from the street asking for help again.)

i know the table prolly formats strange on the front page so click on the permalink for better legibility.

if you've found a cafe in 212 or 718 with a free wifi node (meaning: you've actually confirmed the network's existence), email me and i'll add it to the list.

tricia suggested that i also provide this as a pdf for people to keep on their desktop. i think that was a good idea.

the 2004 ces show.

every january i lament the fact that no one will pay to send me to the consumer electronics show in las vegas. not b/c i have some need for a lap dance but b/c i believe that community media organizations shouldn't be looking for warez at pro teevee conventions. the consumer gear is getting just as good as the pro schtuff, and more importantly, if you want to know where media distribution is heading (isn't that the point?) you've gotta look at what sony and philips are doing b/c it's going to have a greater impact on a distributor's livelihood than acquisition formats will. this TV sh!t is about to change big and people have to start reading the signs. so although i didn't get to go, i've been following the blogs of several folk who did get to go, and this is what i found indicative:

philips announces a TV that streams content from the web.
morgan freeman is releasing a first run film online.
while siemens announces the st60 videophone for europe, samsung gets closer to releasing the sch-v410.
ViXS introduces wireless HDTV.
Linksys releases a wireless DVD player.
sony releases a tv that receives it's signal via a wifi connection to a base station.

all of our content is getting networked and that's just the easy part. :)

gabe on tour.

although i'd rather have him around town discussing all things film, radio, and cell phones, it's good to see gabe leave town for a while just to see him blog. he's on tour with the army, handing out pamphlets and condoms to unsuspecting teenage recruits, and getting in trouble with his superiors. as long as it keeps him off of the subway.

happy new year.

first, a happy new year is in order. although half of me is waiting a few weeks for the year of the monkey. i've kept the braintag quiet for a couple of weeks as i concentrated on the holidays, new family (my first nephew) and my transition from mnn to eyebeam.

oh yeah, i forgot to mention: i've switched life funding providers.

after seven years of working in public access television, i've left to join the staff at eyebeam, a new media artists workshop here in nyc. i'm still working on the same distributed media production projects that i started while at mnn. (and i'm still hosting my teevee show.) but i'm moving to a place where i'll have a lot more kenyatta time to work on the projects i enjoy. (working 60 hours a week for 350+ weeks can take it's toll on a fella.) i've known of and had great respect for the work of eyebeam artists and staff for a while. this should be a good team.

blah blah blah. enough with the chatter. let's get on with the year....
