What we might cover:
- Audioblogging

This Is Not A Definition of Video Blogging.

To better understand video and audio blogging we have to talk about some of the good things about text blogging.

Text blogging is the act of posting your ideas to a web page through easy-to-use, easy-to-maintain online journals. (thx, Harvard) It's also:
- Unfiltered by editors.
- Allows others to link to and comment on your ideas . (Takes advantage of that hyper-web thingy.)
- Inexpensive or free. (Blogger, TypePad)

Other thoughts on Text Blogging:
- Blogs (Blogger, TypePad, etc.) make it easy to publish and share our ideas on the web.
- It's sociable. (The web is text-based.)
- Searches are built on text. (Google.)
- Browsers are built to render text (rich media requires "plug-ins".)
- Most importantly, we've been practicing our writing skills since we were young. We know how to write.

Video blogging is the act of posting an idea expressed through video and audio to the web, usually through an existing text blog. (ugh. did i argue myself into a corner here? is video always experiential? is it about providing an environment? context? a speed bump in flatland?)

In order to video blog, you need to:
- Capture video and audio from camcorders, webcams, videophones to a digital format.
- Editing and preparing the video to be viewed through the web.
- Posting the video to a weblog for people to view.

Okay, if text does all of that, why Video Blog?
- Some people express themselves better through video (we forget most people can't write worth a damn.)
- It's a richer experience than text.
- Collective documentary (nod to Jon Hoem.)
- Enabling citizens media/personal media/participatory media. The media becomes less about centralized distribution of (approved) ideas and more about decentralized and distributed ideas relying on social networks for approval and distribution. (oversimplification, yes)

Video blogging is a little different from text blogging in that it allows you to share both an idea and an experience. You share your idea through both audio and video. Every shot, every sound clip, every edit contributes to the communication of an experience that can sometimes be lost beyond a nifty font and page formatting (text blogging. unfair, i know.).

By sharing an experience you are able to share context. By sharing context you increase the chances for understanding.

You're letting people know how something plays out over time. (Reading this idea is a lot different than seeing me, standing in front of you, reciting this sentence, making eye contact, and communicating supplementary information through my hand movements and facial expressions.)

Types of Videoblog

Much like text blogging can be a two sentence post or a 2000 word rant, videoblogging also takes different forms. Here are three types. (Props to Jon Hoem's Jon Hoem's "Videoblogs as Collective Documentary")

moblog (mobile blogging) - stream of consciousness. - captured on the fly. - related to photoblogging. capture a moment, a raw thought as opposed to a well formed idea. usually from mobile devices and webcams. (Michael Cossarwal)

vog (video blog) - well produced, well structured. video captured and edited before distribution. may include titles, transitions, music, and other elements to make the video richer. May use traditional media production techniques. It's a well formed video blog. (Adrian Miles, Steve Garfield, Jay Dedman)

revog (reblogged) - well prepared video blog. references something found on web, uses web source as content. Not edited, more like a screen capture. (browsetv)

HOW TO videoblog
moblog (not necessarily mobile. just fast and furious.)
what you need:
[computer] [webcam] [mic(optional)] [NLE - iMovie] [web server space]
- Set up your NLE to capture video through your webcam.
- Type your idea into a text editor. () Prepare your idea by giving yourself an outline . (Use text editor as a teleprompter.)
- Check your lighting. Check your audio. (We're going to edit this later so don't worry if you stumble out of the gate. Start over and we'll fix it in post.)
- Press record.
- Say your piece.
- Press stop.
- Play your video back in iMovie.
- Lop off the handles.
- Give it a title.
- "Share Movie" Export to MP4 video with a size of 320x240
- FTP it to our site.

Difference in Delivery
Streaming vs. Download.

Futuremaybe stuff.
If text is good for browsers, what about the web outside of HTML? How do you deliver ideas to people driving cars or sitting on subways? Or zoning out at 3am in an airline seat or in front of a television? Different media formats can serve different purposes. (I'm not saying that video and audio blogging is just for "other devices". Video and audio blogging also works perfectly well in a browser. None of this is exclusive.)

Text blogging is citizens' media for browsers.
Think of audio blogging as blogging for your ipod.
Think of video blogging as blogging for your personal media player.
